How to Dry Brush Your Face

How to Dry Brush Your Face

Here are step by step instructions to dry brushing your face.

  • Your face should be completely dry and cleaned. This should happen one-two days a week for normal, dry, and aging skin or three-four times a week for oily skin. All makeup should be removed before dry brushing.
  • Avoid synthetic bristles. They can damage your skin. Natural bristles are better for your skin. Look for 80% face brush made from boar bristle so your face won't irritate. Boar bristles is hard, so you need to fins a right brush that combine with nylon to make it suitable for your face.
  • Tie your hair back if it is needed. You can also use a headband if need be. Remove all obstacles that would normally be on your face. This includes eyeglasses.
  • Be sure to use very light strokes. Begin stroking at the neck and work towards the forehead. Each area should be stroked about 5 times. There are step by step instructions below.
  • When you are done dry brushing rinse your face and apply moisturizer. This will help hydrate your face. It is also recommended that you drink a glass of water for the same reason.
  • Use gentle upward movement to lift the facial muscles and lightly curve brush down to finish with a light brush stroke. It is in an upside down U shape. Light pressure up and soft stroke down.
  • Be careful never to stretch the skin. The first couple of months be extra gentle, the sensation should be pleasantly stimulating.
  • Stop immediately if it doesn’t feel good or your skin has an allergic reaction.

Here are the important things you need to aware for dry brush your face

Use Lighter Strokes than Body Brushing.
Facial skin is generally more fragile than other types of skin. This is especially true to the skin in near proximity to the eyes. With this being said, gentle strokes should be used when brushing your face. When skin brushing you can use firmer strokes for higher effectiveness. Begin stroking with soft, light strokes in your face without stretching it and applying too much force.

Face brushing is done less than often than body brushing.
Your body should be brushed on a daily basis. Your face does not need as much brushing. If your skin is dry and aging, you will benefit from two brushing a week. If your skin is normal but oily in the "T Zone" you should consider brushing the oiler section on additional days. This helps in a few different ways. It helps prevent blemishes and also releases toxins that cause the clogging of pores. Do not brush near open sores, cuts or other blemishes. Blackheads and whiteheads are excluded.

Direction of Strokes.
If you are doing this correctly it should never hurt. Brushstroke should always be firm and in the direction of your heart. Body brushing should begin at the feet and work up the body. Make sure to pay special care to rougher areas such as elbows and knees. Also pay special attention to lymph-rich areas such as under your arms.

Face brushing uses a different method. Below are instructions to do face brushing properly.

How to do face brushing properly

dry brushing

  1. Begin brushing from your shoulders and breasts inwards.
  2. Neck area - Brush in an upward motion towards the middle and sides. This is in the direction of your chin and ears. Lightly brush under your chin the small strokes to help firm the skin. This will bring it into simulation. This is often where we begin to sag as we age.
  3. Move to Chin - Make an inverted strokes along your chin.
  4. Go to your cheeks - Do circular motions up and outwards and return to where you started.
  5. Upper lip - You should begin in the middle and brush in an outwards motion. You should follow this pattern: left on your left side, middle of right in your right side. then go to your nose area. Small circular motions should be made on your nose followed by moving towards the brow area.
  6. Around the eyes - Stroke gently up and near your brows in a circular motion. Gently trace your eyes while moving towards the right side and left side.
  7. The last is your forehead - Move from the middle to the right and then towards the left.

Practice makes it perfect. When you get better and faster at it, it will take no time at all. It should take less than 5 minutes.

Warnings!

  • Be gentle on your facial skin. Brushing too hard can cause damage and break capillaries. Do not overdo exfoliation and stimulation. They are beneficial but only in small doses.
  • If your skin is getting red or dry you need to cut back on the brushing. You can either reduce how often you do it or change your process.
  • In the case of sensitive skin or any conditions consult a dermatologist before beginning face brushing.
  • Do not share your brush.
  • Do not use your brush in combination of other regiments. This will be too harsh on your skin. It is recommended that you wait about a week before doing any chemical peels safely.
